Our Story
At Avondale House, our story is still being written. And together with our community, we are building the next chapter – one defined by growth, possibility, and a lasting commitment to lifelong impact.
1976
Avondale House was founded by a small but determined group of parents who shared a vision: to create a place where their children with autism could continue to grow, learn, and live meaningful lives. What began in a modest two-story home on Avondale Street in Houston’s Montrose neighborhood quickly became something more. That house served as both a residence and an early learning environment, with programs taking place in the guest quarters out back. Even in those early days, the foundation of our work was clear—community, care, and the belief that every individual deserves opportunity.
1985
As the need for services grew, so did Avondale House. We expanded beyond our original space, growing our programs within the community while establishing additional residential homes in southwest Houston. This period of growth reflected not only increasing demand, but also the deep trust families placed in our mission. Over time, strong partnerships and community support allowed us to expand our reach and deepen our impact.
2006
With continued growth came the need for a permanent home designed specifically for the people we serve. Our Board of Directors launched a capital campaign to bring that vision to life. Every detail of the new facility was thoughtfully considered—creating an environment that fosters independence, learning, and connection while leaving room for the future.
2008
Avondale House opened the doors to our 33,000-square-foot campus on O’Meara Drive. Purpose-built to meet the evolving needs of our community, the space includes life-skills training areas, classrooms, and flexible environments for recreation and connection.
2015
Our campus continued to grow with the addition of five acres of surrounding property, expanding opportunities for outdoor activity and engagement. Today, individuals enjoy amenities like a basketball court, walking track, and welcoming gathering spaces—designed not just for activity, but for friendship and belonging.
Looking Forward
As we look to the future, our commitment remains as strong as ever, but our ambition is even greater. The next 50 years will be guided by the same spirit of innovation and compassion that shaped our beginnings. We will continue to expand and evolve our programs to meet the changing needs of those we serve, invest in our campus and resources, and deepen our partnerships across the community.
